AHEA is the independent national association for people advancing health equity, built so no one doing this work goes unheard, starts from zero, or stands alone.
The gap AHEA was created to address
Health inequities do not disappear because the language around them becomes politically difficult.
Every person deserves a fair shot at a healthy life. That has not changed. The conditions for this work have.
Funding is tightening. Roles are shifting. Programs are being narrowed. Language is being contested. People who have spent years advancing this work are being pushed to the edges even as the need remains urgent.
We have been here before. Public health researchers call the pattern "neglect, panic, repeat": the money shows up when people are scared and leaves when they aren't. Each time, knowledge and trust built over years are lost, and the next time, the work starts from zero.
The work still matters. The people doing it still matter. What has been missing is infrastructure built for this environment: a place where people are heard, their knowledge is kept, and no one carries the work alone.
AHEA was created to help build that infrastructure, with a local focus and a national reach.
Founded from experience
“Throughout more than fifteen years working in public health and health equity - from local health departments to national and international organizations - I have seen how much progress depends on people who continue showing up under difficult conditions.
I have also seen how vulnerable that progress can be.
Today, funding is shifting, institutions are more cautious, and the language available to describe what communities are experiencing has become more constrained. Many professionals are trying to protect programs, preserve relationships, and continue the work without losing the purpose that brought them to it.
I understand the instinct to become quieter, smaller, and more careful. But I do not believe retreat can be our only response.
Too much has been built over decades: knowledge, trust, leadership, community partnerships, and hard-won progress. If those foundations are allowed to weaken or disappear, they may be far more difficult to rebuild than we imagine. We need to create something people can rely on now - and something they can return to when conditions change again.
That is why I founded AHEA: so the people doing this work never go unheard, never start from zero, and never stand alone.

Sonia Gupta is a public health and health equity leader with more than fifteen years of experience building and leading national initiatives.
Her work has included collaboration with organizations ranging from local health departments to the World Health Organization across infectious disease response, substance use, homelessness, mental health, and efforts to strengthen health systems for populations facing disproportionate barriers to health.
She holds a BA in political science from Yale University, MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and MBA from MIT Sloan.
Built for public benefit. Designed to last.
AHEA is a mission-driven public benefit company. That structure reflects the problem it was created to address: too much important public health work depends on short-term grants, changing institutional priorities, and infrastructure that can disappear when the environment shifts.
AHEA was built to last between the crises, not just during them, independent of any funding cycle, any single funder, or any shift in institutional priorities.
Because AHEA is supported primarily by its members, it answers first to them: the people doing the work. Members choose whether the work is valuable enough to sustain, and their membership helps shape what AHEA continues to build. Their support sustains the tools, forums, publications, and national initiatives AHEA provides, and the knowledge and evidence it shares with the wider field.
A focused complement to broader associations
AHEA is not meant to replace APHA or other established associations. Broad associations connect members across the full field. AHEA adds a focused, practical layer for people advancing health equity: specialized tools, publications, recognition, and ways to lead. The goal is not to recreate what already exists, but to give this work a durable home.
