AMERICAN JOURNAL OF HEALTH EQUITY

A journal about health equity -
and built to practice it

The American Journal of Health Equity is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal being developed by AHEA to publish credible and relevant work that advances health equity research and practice.

The journal is founded on the principle that equity should shape not only what is published, but also how knowledge is created, evaluated, and shared.

Its publication model will recognize research expertise, applied practice, community knowledge, and relevant lived experience while maintaining clear standards for quality, relevance, and integrity.

Equity built into the publication model

Thoughtful peer review

Use defined editorial and peer-review standards that support credible scholarship, constructive feedback, and consideration of practical and community relevance.

Broader participation

Create meaningful opportunities for researchers, practitioners, community contributors, and people with relevant lived experience to participate in knowledge creation and publication.

Knowledge that can be used

Strengthen connections among research, policy, professional practice, and community experience so published knowledge can reach and benefit audiences beyond academia.

The goal is not only to publish work about health equity, but also to demonstrate how equity can be reflected in the process through which health knowledge is developed, reviewed, and shared.

Editorial and peer-review participation

The American Journal of Health Equity will be directed by AHEA with support from a Founding Editorial Board and a broader peer-reviewer network.

Founding Editorial Board

Editorial Board members will support manuscript assessment, provide publication recommendations and substantive feedback, help identify appropriate reviewers, uphold the journal’s quality and integrity standards, and encourage suitable submissions within their professional networks.

Peer-reviewer network

Peer reviewers will evaluate individual manuscripts within their areas of knowledge or experience and provide confidential, constructive feedback to authors and editors.

Preparing for submissions

AHEA is currently establishing the journal’s publication infrastructure and preparing for its initial call for manuscripts.

The journal will operate as an open-access publication and will charge an article processing fee for accepted manuscripts. Submission guidelines, article categories, fee amounts, review procedures, and publication timelines will be announced before submissions open.

Submissions are not yet open.
